Description
Borg I:Ib represents the earliest phase
of the house-remains found during the main
excavation. Dating indicates that this building was
erected around AD 450 and rebuilt AD 700. Around
700 AD, the house is extended (Borg I:Ia).
Excavations of these two house structures indicate
a long term habitation from the period AD 450 to
c 950 AD.
Why did the people choose to rebuild the house about AD 700? And what kind of changes do we recognise at these Sacred Heights from paganism towards Christianity?
Excavation Details
House site I:Ib represents the oldest
settlement phase of the two building-remains found
during excavations of settlement structure I at
Borg. The house foundations had a length of 67 m,
and were about 8 m wide. Dating based on artefact
typology and the c-14 method, indicates settlement
activity with a time span between AD 450- c. AD
700. The end of phase one, marks a change when a
new building is being put up: House I:Ia, the
Chieftains house, obviously wider and longer.
