Borg Cultural Layers

Description
During restoration of an old stone fence, cultural layers were localised in 1994,  beneath and outside the stone fence. Ringstad documented the area by excavating narrow trenches. The investigation showed that the layers were up to 40 cm thick and 24 m in length, and these could be possible remains of settlement.

The finds have museum number TS 656 1 g-l and were identified as:Sherds of soapstone vessels, yellow polished potsherds, iron fragments, and soapstone-plates for baking, indicating Late Medieval Times.

Further excavation in this area may give us more information about the use of the whole area around the modern Church, back to the Medieval Times. Localisation of possible settlement structures around the old stone fence could perhaps verify the interpretation of the area as remains of Medieval Churchyard.

Another interesting question for future excavation is whether the area contains burial mounds from pagan times leading up to early Christianisation.
