The Anniversary by Ronnie (from Italy)
I took up my chair in the corner of the room Looking over the evening's banquet table Plates of half-eaten food lay around Knives and forks in disarray Glasses some empty Some full How different from the party a little while ago The table was set with a floral centrepiece People were laughing at stupid jokes Cigarette smoke filled the air Knives to the left or right Glasses were all full Even the clock on the wall has stopped ticking The time signed on its face is around 11:00 Was the party a success, who cares Another anniversary has come Yet where have they all gone I was waiting in church Only yesterday Or it seems I remember the nervousness of the morning Time seemed to be standing still Then finally the preparation And the run for the chapel Waiting there forever Friends joking I was pacing When you arrived before the church in your gown Visions of angels, of doves cascaded down Organs played, choirs sang Ave Maria; Two priests celebrated Mass Eternity in a second Kisses exchanged Dreams realised Our friends have long gone away, I have sent you off to bed As I watch you resting, a sweet cherub on a cloud I want to pen these last thoughts from my head These recollections of my foggy memories A wedding Mass sixteen years past For me only a second ago I said "I do!"
