For Fifth Grade by Rachel

Hey there
Haven't seen you for a long time
Do you have a minute to stop and talk?
There's some things I've been meaning to tell you
and I don't have much time left
Do you remember when we were little girls
and we played foolishly through the short hours in the days
and how even school was interesting with you in my class
and I helped you with math
and you coached me in science?
Do you recall when that new girl came
and you chose her over me
even though I'd known her a long time and I knew
she was a leech and a liar and a snob?
but maybe she was only those things
because I saw her as a threat to me
(I can admit that now - I never could before)
Do you ever think about the times
when we held hands as little girls do
and ran across the blacktop
playing "horse" at the basketball hoop?
you were better than me but you let me win sometimes anyway
we were side-by-side for years
Wait! Don't go yet!
I know I'm boring you
why should you care about these little details now?
You would have before, but I don't know you anymore
please stay another minute, just one more question
did you let go, my friend - or did I?
