County Westmeath, Ireland
Westmeath
extends from the Shannon's Lough Ree in the west to the
shores of Lough Sheelin in the north-east and to Kinnegad
and the Royal Canal in the south.
Westmeath is famous for
its lakes and there is a wealth of trout and coarse fishing
on lakes Owel, Ennell, Derravaragh, Ree and the River
Shannon. Lough Derravaragh in Co. Westmeath is said to have
been one of the lakes in which the children of Lír
lived for centuries after being transformed into swans by an
evil spell cast by their stepmother.
Mullingar in County
Westmeath was also the seat of the High King of Ireland
before Saint Patrick came to Ireland.
