Rosscarbery, County Cork
Rosscarbery is a small historic town set in picturesque surroundings and situated on a shallow estuary, which opens onto Rosscarbery Bay. The town grew up around a monastery, which was established in the latter half of the 6th century by Saint Fachtna. Historically, Rosscarbery became famous as a centre of religion and learning, at one time being a university town, and the area was known as Ross Ailithir (meaning Ross of the Pilgrims).
For the archaeologist, there is an abundance of megalithic tombs, stone circles and standing stones in the area - Drombeg being the most famous. For the historian there are many places to visit - such as St. Fachtna's Cathedral, Castlefreke, Coppinger's Court and the birthplaces of General Michael Collins and O'Donovan Rossa, to name but a few.
Rosscarbery has many beautiful tourist attractions and sites of interest for tourists visiting the nicely decorated town with many traditional shop fronts. A wide variety of amenities for families of all ages are within walking distance of the town of Rosscarbery and it is a popular summer destination being within easy reach of at least three fine beaches - the Warren Beach, Ownahincha Beach and the Long Strand offer safe bathing and golden sands. Rosscarbery Pitch & Putt Club is located at the the Warren Beach.
Pedal boats, rowing dinghies or canoes are available for hire at the Marine Leisure Centre where sailing lessons are also available, while the children's playground and tennis courts are nearby.
Rosscarbery has many other attractions and activities such as estuary, rock, deep sea and fresh water fishing for the angler; bird watching in the estuary, tours of the area on horseback with an expert guide from one of the local riding centres or a leisurely stroll along one of the many quiet rural lanes running through scenic countryside with breathtaking views of land and sea.
